Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has announced relief measures for the families of those killed in the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, where 26 people, mostly tourists, lost their lives. To ease the claims process, LIC said it will accept any official government record of the policyholder's death or proof of compensation paid by central or state authorities and accept it as a death certificate.
"LIC announced many concessions to mitigate the hardships of the claimants of LIC policies," said Siddhartha Mohanty, MD, LIC. "In lieu of death certificates, any evidence in government records of death of the policyholder due to the terrorist attack or any compensation paid by central/state government will be accepted as proof of death."
The insurer said it will make all efforts to ensure that the claimants are reached out and claims are settled expeditiously to the affected families. Life insurance covers death due to terrorism, war, or natural calamities unless specifically excluded in the policy, according to the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai).
Most life insurance policies now cover death from terrorist attacks, making it easier for families to claim benefits during such tragic events.
